**T****H****E EFFECTIVENESS MISSOURI MATHEMATICS PROJECT (MMP) WITH TALKING STICK AND GUIDED DISCOVERY METHOD IN MATHEMATICS LEARNING OF THE EIGHTH GRADERS OF SMP NEGERI 1 KOLAKA**

This is an experimental research which purposes are to (1) identify mathematics learning aptitudes of the eighth graders of SMP Negeri 1 Kolaka taught by using Missouri Mathematics Project (MMP) with Talking Stick and Guided Discovery methods; (2) identify mathematics learning aptitudes of the eighth graders taught by using conventional learning model; (3) identify the effectiveness of Missouri Mathematics Project (MMP) with Talking Stick and Guided Discovery methods. The hypothesis of this research is that mathematics learning aptitudes of the students treated using Missouri Mathematics Project (MMP) with Talking Stick and Guided Discovery methods are better than the aptitudes of those taught by using conventional learning method.

The population is all of the students of eighth grade distributed in nine parallel classes with the total numbers of 275 students. The samples were drawn by using cluster random sampling technique; it was conducted to draw an experimental class and a control class. The total samples are 62 students. The data of mathematics learning aptitudes were collected from the test result. The data were analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistics. The empirical results show that (1) the mean score of mathematics learning aptitude of 31 students taught by using Missouri Mathematics Project (MMP) with Talking Stick and Guided Discovery methods is 77.0806 with the minimum score is 40 and the maximum score is 98; the median is 70.00 and the mode is 78.00; the variance is 159.7849 and the deviation standard is 12.6406. (2) The mean score of the students taught by using conventional learning method is 69.9030 with the minimum score of 45 and the maximum score of 98; the median is 76.00 and the mode of 65.00 with the variance of 158.6903 and deviation standard of 12.5972. (3) Based on the analysis of observation sheets of teacher’s and students’ activities in both classes, the involvement criterion ranges from 75% to 85%. The inferential results were obtained from t-test and it can be seen that the value of significance = .036 < a = .05; it means that H0 is rejected and H1 is affirmed. It can be stated that there is a significant difference between mathematics learning aptitudes of the students taught by using Missouri Mathematics Project (MMP) with Talking Stick and Guided Discovery methods and mathematics learning aptitudes of the students taught using conventional learning method. Therefore, it can be concluded that Missouri Mathematics Project (MMP) with Talking Stick and Guided Discovery methods is more effective to improve students’ mathematics learning aptitudes than conventional learning method.
