This  research  is  an  experimental  research  which  purposes  are  (1)  to  identify  mathematics learning aptitudes of the seventh graders of SMP Negeri 1 Latambaga who were taught using PBL with talking stick method, (2) to identify mathematics learning aptitudes of the students who were taught using conventional learning method, and (3) to identify whether the implementation of PBL with talking stick method is more effective than conventional learning. The hypothesis of this research is that the use PBL with talking stick method is more effective than conventional learning method in improving students’ mathematics learning aptitudes.

The population is all of the students of seventh grade distributed in 6 parallel classes with the total  of  178  students.  The  samples  were  drawn  by  using  cluster  random  sampling.  This  sampling technique was managed to obtain 2 (two) research class; one as the experimental class and the other as the control class. The total samples from these classes are 66 students. The data were collected from the results of the tests which were then used to obtain the data of mathematics learning aptitudes of the students. The data analysis techniques used are descriptive and inferential statistics.

The results of this research empirically show that (2) the mean score of mathematics learning aptitudes of the students of seventh grade class of B treated using PBL with talking stick method  is 74.0606 with the minimum score of 56 and the maximum score of 97; the median is 72.00 and the mode is 70.00 with the variance of 105.2386 and deviation standard of 10.2585. (2) The mean score of mathematics learning aptitudes of the students of seventh grade class of A taught by using conventional learning model is 66.348 with the minimum score of 40 and the maximum score of 87; the median is 67.00 and the mode is 63.00 with the variance og 169.226 and deviation standard of 13.008. (3) Based on the analysis of observation sheet of teacher’s and students’ activities in both classes, it can be stated that there is a criterion of involvement with the percentage ranges from 75% – 85%.

The result was inferentially obtained by conducting t-test. The score of tcalculation (2.676) > ttable (1.9987) with dk = 64 within significance rate of α = 0,05 indicating that Ho is rejected and H1 is affirmed. Inferentially, it means that there is a significance difference between mathematics learning aptitudes of the students taught using PBL model with talking stick method and mathematics learning aptitudes of the students taught using conventional method. Therefore, it can be concluded that the implementation of PBL model with talking stick method is better than conventional method in improving the students’ mathematics learning aptitudes.

COMPARING MATHEMATICS LEARNING APTITUDES OF THE EIGHTH GRADERS OF SMP NEGERI 1 LATAMBAGA TAUGHT USING TEAM QUIZ TYPE OF ACTIVE LEARNING STRATEGY TO THE EIGHTH GRADERS OF SMP NEGERI 1 LATAMBAGA TAUGHT USING FIRING LINE TYPE OF ACTIVE LEARNING STRATEGY

Abstract

1Sudianti, Iin Sry, 2Supratman

This research was conducted based on the problem that many teachers still use teaching method which makes the teachers as the center of learning. This situation makes the students’ learning aptitude low. This research offers a learning strategy that is considered best to improve students’ learning aptitudes, that is Team Quiz Type of Active Learning Strategy and Firing Line Type of Active Learning Strategy.

This research was aimed to identify the comparison of mathematics learning aptitude of the students taught using Team Quiz type of Active Learning Strategy to the students taught using Firing Line type of Active Learning Strategy and to identify which group that serves better result. This study is an experimental study with Post-Test Only Control Design. The research was conducted in SMP Negeri 1 Latambaga Academic Year of 2014/2015; the research was managed towards the eighth graders during their even semester.

Based on the results of descriptive analysis, the mean score of mathematics learning aptitude of the students taught using Team Quiz Type of Active Learning Strategy is 77.13 with the deviation standard of 9.36. From the results, it can be said that 0% (none) of the students is classified in the lowest group, 9.38% (3 students) of the students are classified in low group, 62.3% (20 students) of the students are classified in the fair group, and 28.13% (9 students) are classified in the highest group. On the other hand, the mean score of mathematics learning aptitudes of the students taught using Firing Line type of Active Learning Strategy is 75.94 with the deviation standard of 9.13. From the results, it can be said that 0% (none) of the students is classified in the lowest group, 12.5% (4 students) of the students are classified in low group, 53.13% (17 students) of the students are classified in the fair group, and 34.38% (11 students) are classified in the highest group.

The hypothesis  was  examined  by  using  t-test  for  two  independent  samples;  from  the  result  of  this calculation, it can be stated that tcalculation = .515 < ttable = 1.99 within the significance rate of α = .05 and dk = = n1 + n2 – 2 (32 + 32 – 2 = 62). Because tcalculation < ttable or .515 < 1.99, tcalculation is beyond the criteria of conformity of H1; thus, H0 is affirmed. Therefore, it can be concluded that there is no significant difference between mathematics learning aptitudes of the students taught using Team Quiz type of Active Learning Strategy and of the students taught using Firing Line type of Active Learning Strategy.

Kata kunci : team quiz type of active learning strateg;  firing line type of active learning strategy; and mathematics learning aptitude.
