This research presents about the effect of Experience Text Relationship (ETR) technique toward the students’ reading ability at second grade of SMPN 1 Kolaka. The research question was “is there any significant effect of ETR technique toward the students’ reading ability at second grade of SMP Negeri 1 Kolaka?”The objective of the research was to find out whether ETR technique is effective to be used in teaching reading ability. The significances of the research was the students to help them comprehend the reading text easily. The hypothesis of this research was“there is any significant effect of ETR toward the students’ reading ability at second grade of SMPN 1 Kolaka”.The scope of the research was focused on the effect of ETR on students’ reading ability at second grade of SMPN 1 Kolaka.

The design of this research was pre-experimental design in one group pre-test and post-test. The population of this research was the second year students of SMPN 1 Kolaka in the academic 2015/2016. There were 24 students’ were involved as the sample and they were students of class VIII c.

Based on the result of finding and discussion in chapter IV, it can be concluded that there is an effect of ETR technique toward the students’ reading ability at second grade of SMP Negeri 1 Kolaka. It can be seen in two aspects descriptive statistic and inferential statistic. The first in terms of descriptive statistic it was found that the average mean of pre-test (42,4583) was lower than mean of post-test (82,7500), median of pre-test (40,0000) was lower than the median of pre-test (80,0000), the mode of pre-test (33,00) was lower than the mode of post-test (80,0000). The second was in terms of inferential statistic, it was found the value of t-test was (3,597) and t- table was (2,690) it means that t-test is higher than t-table (3,597 > 2,690) at significant level 0.05 and degree of freedom = 23. So H0 was reject and H1 was accepted. It means that there was an effect of ETR technique towards the students’ reading ability at second grade of SMP Negeri 1 Kolaka.
