Grammatical Error Analysis in Students’ Recount Texts (Content Analysis of the Third Grade Students of SMA Negeri 1 Samaturu)

This final project primarily deals with grammatical error analysis. To describe the grammatical errors in writing recount texts made by the thirdgrade students of SMA Negeri 1 Samaturu in the academic year of 2016/2017. The researcher used the qualitative approach of which the data were obtained from the students’ recount text writing. These writings were then analyzed. The grammatical errors were classified into seven groups. They were errors in producing verb group, errors in spelling the words, errors of incomplete sentence, errors in capitalization, errors in using singular-plural, errors in the use of pronouns and errors in the use of article.

Base on the result of the data analysis, the researcher concluded the students made 235 grammatical errors which were classified into 153 or 65.0 %errors in use of word form, 3 or 1.3 %errors in spelling the words, 10 or 4.3 % errors of incomplete sentence,30 or 12.8 %errors in capitalization, 125.1 %errors in using singular-plural, 23 or 9.8 %errors in use of pronouns and 41.7 %errors in the use of article.  From the result theresearcher concluded that the possible causes of errors were overgeneralization, and interference. It was suggested that the students still need more practices dealing with verb forms since they were the basic knowledge needed for telling their past experiences.
