Improving the Students’ Reading Comprehension through WH-Question Technique at the Third Grade of SMP Negeri 1 Lasusua

The problem of the research was: “How could the WH-Question improve the students’ reading comprehension at the third grade of SMP Negeri 1 Lasusua?”. The significance of the research was to improve our knowledge in English about reading comprehension, so that we could avoid misunderstanding in communication and reading, expected could be useful in teaching and learning process. The scope of the research focuses on improving the students’ reading comprehension through WH-Question technique at the third grade of SMP Negeri 1 Lasusua.

The design of the research was collaborative Classroom Action Research (CAR). The setting of this research was SMP Negeri 1 Lasusua. The school     was situated on Jl. Protokol, No. 35 Kecamatan Lasusua Kabupaten Kolaka Utara and subject of this research was the third grade in IX D class in the academic years of 2016/2017. The class consisted of 22 students with 10 males and 12 females. The research was held from 11th July to 11th August 2016 instruments of the research.

The result of this research showed that reading comprehension of most students improved. It can be seen from the average students value was 58.18 in the first cycle. Only 8 at 22 (36.36%) students achieved the criteria of success in the first cycle and increased become 75 in the second cycle. There were 19 at 22 (86.36%) of the students achieved the criteria of success in the second cycle. The success of this research could be seen from the result of the observation sheet showing that the improvement of the students’ activities since the first meeting until the fourth meeting. The result of observation sheet for students in cycle one were 12 (very poor) in meeting one, 17 (poor) in meeting two, 22 (fair) in meeting three and cycle two improve 23 (fair) in meeting one, 31 (very good) in meeting two, and 33 (very good) in meeting three. While the teacher’s activities result of cycle one were 30 (poor) in meeting one, 45 (fair) in meeting two, 55 (good) in meeting three and cycle two improve 62 (good) in meeting one, 70 (very good) in meeting two, and 75 (very good) in meeting three.
