Improving the Students’ Vocabulary Mastery through Guessing Word Game at the Second Grade of SMP Negeri 4 Tanggetada

    This research was designed to improve the students’ vocabulary mastery through guessing word game at the second grade of SMP Negeri 4 Tanggetada. The research question of the research was “How can guessing word game improve the students’ vocabulary mastery at the second grade of SMP Negeri 4 Tanggetada?”

The design of the research used collaborative Classroom Action Research (CAR) which consisted of five procedures, they were preliminary research, planning, implementing, observing and reflecting. It means that the researcher collaborated with an English teacher when conducted this research. The subject of the research was the second-grade students with 34 students. The research was conducted in two cycles and each cycle had four meetings. The data of the research was obtained from the result of observation sheet and vocabulary test which were obtained during the implementation of the action.

The result of the research based on the finding and discussion could be concluded that guessing word game could improve the students’ vocabulary mastery at the second grade of SMP Negeri 4 Tanggetada. The improvement could be seen from two aspects. Firstly, the students’ score of the vocabulary test, there were 16 or 47% of the students achieved more than or equal 65 in the first cycle and became 28 or 82% in the second cycle. Secondly, the students were actively involved in the teaching and learning process, it could be seen from the result of analysis observation sheet in the first cycle had 5, 40 (poor), it improved to 6, 96 (good) in the second cycle.

Based on the finding of this research, it was suggested to apply this strategy as one of the alternative strategies in teaching vocabulary so that the students were not bored in learning English.

This study was carried out to investigate a study of improving the students’ vocabulary mastery through the use of funny picture at the first grade of SMP Negeri 1 Tanggetada. The problem of this study was: How did improve the students’ vocabulary mastery at the first grade of SMP Negeri 1 Tanggetada?. The objective of this study was to describe the data and information whether funny picture could improve the students’ vocabulary mastery of the first grade at SMP Negeri 1 Tanggetada. The significance of the study was: to improve the mastery in vocabulary through the use of the funny picture, to get a good result of the students’ vocabulary, to be an information to English teacher in improving learning and teaching process. The scope of the study was focused on the use of the funny picture in improving the students’ vocabulary mastery of the first grade SMP Negeri 1 Tanggetada.

Design of this study was collaborative Classroom Action Research (CAR), the writer collaborated with one of the English teachers to make sure that funny pictures effective and suitable for solving the teaching problem. The setting of the study was SMP Negeri 1 Tanggetada and the subject 21 students of the study was the students of first grade (VII B class) of SMP Negeri 1 Tanggetada who registered in the academic year of 2015/2016. The instruments of this study were vocabulary test and observation sheet.

    The result of this study showed that funny picture could improve students’ vocabulary at the first grade of SMP Negeri 1 Tanggetada. It could be seen from the average students’ value as the improvement of the students’ vocabulary mastery by the funny picture the average value of the student’s mastery was 61,43 in the first cycle there were 11 of 21 students or 47,60% mastery more or equal 66 and it increased became 84,29 in the second cycle. There were 21 of 21 of success that was 100% of the students obtained more or equals 66. The result of the observation sheet showing that the average of the improvement of students’ activities since the first meeting until the fourth meeting was 3,80in the first cycle also the average of the improvement of teacher’s activities since the first meeting until the fourth meeting was 4,27 in the second cycle.

Improving the Students’ Reading Comprehension by Using Know-Want-Learn Technique at the Ninth Grade of SMPN 1 Kodeoha

The background of the research in this research is based on the phenomenon that student have difficulties in getting meanings of difficult words so that they has to use their dictionaries when they found words they did not know the meaning. To improve students’ ability in reading, the teacher needs a strategy by using Know-Want-Learn Technique. KWL is one of technique that can be used in teaching reading comprehension.

The researcher formulated a research question “How the Know-Want-Learn (KWL) technique can improve students’ reading comprehension at the ninth grade students of SMPN 1 Kodeoha in the academic year of 2016/2017? The objective of the research was aimed at improving students’ reading comprehension at the ninth grade students of SMPN 1 Kodeoha in the academic year of 2015/2016.

This research was a classroom action research. It was done through two cycles. In the research, the researcher collaborated with the English teachers. The data of this research were qualitative in nature supported by quantitative data. Qualitative data were obtained from the results of classroom observation. Quantitative data were obtained from post test results.

The researcher found that the students’ reading comprehension improved from first cycle to second cycle. In first cycle, the average score of the reading comprehension in text is 60.42 (42.30%) or 11 of 26 students who could reach the KKM. In second cycle, the average score of reading comprehension in narrative is 73.15 (84.61%) or 22 of 26 students could reach the KKM.

Based on the result above, the researcher concluded that Know-Want-Learn (KWL) technique can improve reading comprehension of the ninth grade students of SMPN 1 Kodeoha in academic year 2015/2016. For the teacher and the other researcher, KWL technique can be applied as an activity in teaching learning process step by step based on the students’ characteristic.

    The purpose of this study is to describe the objective condition of  The Effect of Total Physical Response Technique is Vocabulary Achievement at First Grade of SMPN 1 Kolaka.. It includes the differences on the students’ vocabulary mastery learnt by using Total Physical Response Method compared to the students’ vocabulary mastery learnt by using Grammar Translation Method, and the students’ vocabulary achievement learnt by using Total Physical Response Technique.

The aim of the research is to gain the information about the effect of Total Physical Response Technique in teaching vocabulary, moreover, it is conducted to get the effective technique in teaching vocabulary at seventh grade of students of junior high School 1 Kolaka. The sample of the research was 27 students of the seventh year. This research was using an experimental method in the quantitative form by collecting data from the documentation, and test.

The data collected in this research were analyzed by using SPSS. According to the result of statistical calculation, the obtained value of the value of “rxy ”  from the df (29) on the degree of significance of 5% is 0.396. Comparing the with each value of the degree of significance, the researcher finds 64.59 > 52.61. So is higher than or >. Based on the result, the null hypothesis (H0) which says there was no significant influence of using Total Physical Response technique in teaching vocabulary is rejected. It means that the alternative hypothesis (H1) which says that there was the significant influence of using Total Physical Response Technique in teaching vocabulary is accepted.

Based on the finding of this study it can be concluded that using Total Physical Response in teaching vocabulary is quite a success by using TPR technique. It is not only effective to lead students to feel more interesting and enjoy doing activity in the class but also it can give the students the opportunities to be active in learning English vocabulary.

An Analysis of Poetry Language Sutardji Calzoum Bachri

This research is based on Sutardji Calzoum Bachri’s poems that show unique things compared to poems written by other poets. This uniqueness lies in the sounds, syntax, and style of language used. The uniqueness of sound lies in consistent repetition, the uniqueness of poetical syntax lies in structuring the structures and sentence functions and the uniqueness of the language style lies in the repetition that gives rise to magical effects such as mantras. The problem studied in this research is “How is the Poetry Language of Sutardji Calzoum Bachri?” This study aims to describe the language of Sutardji Calzoum Bachri poetry. The expected benefits of this study are (a) theoretically, this research is useful for the development of literary theory, especially poetry, sound, syntax, and language. (b) It is practically useful (1) Researchers and readers can obtain an in-depth description of the Sutardji Calzoum Bachri poem language. (2) Referral sources for further researchers and as a reference source of Indonesian language and literature learning materials especially poetry learning. The method used in this research is the descriptive qualitative method with the type of literature research. Sources of data in this study is a collection of poems by Sutardji Calzoum Bachri, namely O, Amuk and Ax. The data are texts (arrays and stanzas) of poetry JADI, SEPISAUPI, TAPI, SHANG-HAI, and HILANG (KETEMU) containing elements (1) Sound, (2) Syntax, and (3) Linguistic style. The results of the study show that (1) Sutardji’s poems Calzoum Bachri utilizes repetition of sounds to achieve certain aesthetic qualities, (2) poetical syntax constructed by elements, such as (a) subject, predicate, and object / complement, description, (b) ) predicate, description, (c) predicate, object, (d) predicate, subject, and (e) predicate. (3) The language style of reps. The language style poet used in poetry is the repetition found in elements, words, phrases and sentences that build poetry.

This study was designed to improve the students’ reading comprehension through extensive reading strategies at the second grade of SMPN 3 Kolaka. The problem of this study was “ how can extensive reading improve the students’ reading comprehension at the second grade of SMPN 3 Kolaka”,  The objective of the study was to find out can extensive reading improve the students’ reading comprehension at the second grade of SMPN 3 Kolaka. The significance of the study was to get a good result of the students’ reading comprehension, and also to be information to the English teacher in improving learning and teaching process. The scope of the study was focused at the using extensive reading strategies to improve the students’ Reading Comprehension at the second grade of SMPN 3 Kolaka, beside that the genre of the text was used as the material is Narrative text.

The design of the study was collaborative Classroom Action Research (CAR). It means that when implementing the study, the writer collaborated with one of the English teachers of SMPN 3 Kolaka. The subject of the study was the students of the second grade (VIII) of SMPN 3 Kolaka in the academic year of 2015/2016. The researcher conducted the study in tow cycle which consisted of preliminary study, planning, implementing, observing, data analyzing and reflecting. The data of the study were obtained from the result reading test and from observation sheet, which was taken during the implementation of the action.

In the form of the process, the students’ attitudes improved from cycle to cycle as reflected from the result of observation. The students were actively involved in the teaching-learning process. It could be proved the result of observation sheet for students. In the first cycle, the student average score was 2 means poor. It improved to be 4 means good in the second cycle.

Meanwhile, in the formed product, the improvement could be seen from the result of reading test. In the first cycle, the students’ average value was, the improvement could be seen from the result of reading test. In the first cycle the students’ average value was 62.61 in other words 9 of 21 students (42%) in the second cycle it was 79.85 or 17 of 21 students (80%).

The conclusion of the students in the teaching English in reading through extensive reading strategies can improve the students’ reading comprehension especially in reading the narrative text. Both the students and the teacher were active in process teaching and learning for student did regular practice to read by extensive reading strategies.

This thesis was designed to improve the students’ reading comprehension by using contextual guessing technique of SMP Negeri 1 Wundulako. The question of the study was “How Contextual Guessing Technique can improve the students’ reading comprehension at the second year of SMP Negeri 1 Wundulako?” The objective of the study was “to improve the students’ reading comprehension at the second year of SMP Negeri 1 Wundulako by using Contextual Guessing Technique”. The design of this study was collaborative Classroom Action Research (CAR). It was intended to improve the students’ reading comprehension by using contextual guessing. This study was conducted from August 24th to September 17th, 2016 at the second year of SMP Negeri 1 Wundulako. Based on the result of this study, it could be concluded that contextual guessing technique could improve the students’ reading comprehension at the second year of SMP Negeri 1 Wundulako.

The improvement can be seen from two aspects, process and product. Firstly, it the form of product, the students’ average value was 61.34 in the first cycle, there were 12 of 26 students (46.16%) achieved the criteria for success. It improved to be 84.02 in the second cycle, there were 20 of 26 students (76.97%) achieved the criteria for success. It means the result had achieved the criteria of success that the students got the value greater than or equal 75. Secondly, in the form of the process, the students were actively involved in teaching and learning process. It can be seen from the result of the analysis of observation sheet in the first cycle was 2.27 and it improved to be 4.23 in the second cycle.

This study was designed to improve the students’ Reading comprehension by Silent Reading at the second year of SMP Negeri 1 Baula. The problem of the study was”can Silent Reading improve the students’ reading comprehension at the second year of SMP Negeri 1 Baula?”. The objective of the study is to describe whether silent reading can improve the students’ reading comprehension at the second year of SMP Negeri 1 Baula. The significance of the study is to improve students’ reading comprehension by silent reading, besides that is expected to give meaningful information to the teacher in teaching reading by silent reading, especially for English teacher at the second year of SMP Negeri 1 Baula. There are many kinds of media that we can be used in teaching reading, but in this study, the writer applied only silent reading.

The design of the study collaborated Classroom Action Research (CAR), the writer collaborated with one of the English teachers of SMP Negeri 1 Baula. The study was conducted at the second year students of SMP Negeri 1 Baula which was registered in 2013/2014 academic year. This study was conducted in the second cycle by following the procedure of classroom action research such as preliminary study, planning, implementing, observing, analysis and reflecting. The data were collected by using observation sheet and reading test assignment which took during the implementation of the action.

The result of this study also showed that silent reading could improve students’ ability in reading at the second year of SMP Negeri 1 Baula. It could be seen from the average score was 67.9 or 63% in the first cycle. This score increased 81.3 or 100% in the second cycle. It means that the criteria of success had achieved.

    This research was designed to improve the students’ achievement on vocabulary through cartoon film at the second year of SMP Negeri 3 Kolaka. The research question of the research was “How is the improvement of the students’ achievement on vocabulary through cartoon film at the second year of SMP Negeri 3 Kolaka”. The objective of the research was to describe the students’ vocabulary improvement through cartoon film at the second year of SMP Negeri 3 Kolaka. The researcher expects that the result of this research was useful and helpful information for both English teacher and the students in improving their English vocabulary through cartoon film. This research was focused on improving the students’ achievement on vocabulary through cartoon film at the second year of SMP Negeri 3 Kolaka. The researcher has used Dora the Explorer film.

The design of the research was collaborative Classroom Action Research (CAR). It means that, when applying this research, researcher collaborated with one of the classroom English teachers of SMP Negeri 3 Kolaka. The subject if this research is the students of the second year of SMP Negeri 3 Kolaka, especially in class VIIIC. It consists of 21 students. This research was conducted in two cycles which consisted of preliminary research, planning, implementing, observing, analyzing, and reflecting.

The result of the study showed that cartoon film could improve the students’ vocabulary achievement. The improvement can be seen on two points of views, namely process and product.

In the forming process, the students’ attitudes improved from time to time reflected from the result of observation. It can be proved from the result of the observation sheet for students. In the first cycle students’ average score was 65%, it belongs to good and it improved 92,5% in the last meeting of cycle two.

In the form of product, the improvement can be examined from the result of the vocabulary test. In the first cycle students’ average 75,71 0r 71,42%. in another word, only fifteen of 21 students could achieve the criteria of success. It was 65. It improved become 91,66 or 100% students achieved the criteria for success in the second cycle. In another word, all the students could achieve the criteria for success.

The Effect of Write-Pair-Share Technique on the Students’ Reading Comprehension at the VIII Grade of SMP Negeri 1 Latambaga

This research investigated the effect of Write-Pair-Share technique on the students’ reading comprehension at the VIII grade students of SMPN 1 Latambaga. This research applied Quasy experiment by applying control class and experiment class pre and post test. The population of this research were all of the students at the VIII Grade of SMPN 1 Latambaga. The sample was taken by using certain procedure and were as the samples were two classes, namely VIII-A as the experimental group and VIII-B the control group. The research designed the differences instruments for both of pre-test and post-test. The instrument is in the form of multiple-choice questions which are taken from some resources. The researcher used  two kind of statistic, they are descriptive statistic and inferential statistic.

The result shows that the students’ reading comprehension Inreferencetothedataanalysisofbothgroups,the researcher concludes that the students’ mean score in experimental class (Write-Pair-Share technique) is raised 30.83 point from 60.42 at pre test becomes 91.25 at post test. While, students’ mean score in control class (conventional technique class) only raises 5.68 point from 65.91 on pre-test becomes 70.68 at post test. This result proves the students’ reading comprehension who taught by using Write-Pair-Share technique has a significant difference with students’ reading comprehension who taught by using non-Write-Pair-Share technique. This result proves that the means scores of the students attending Write-Pair-Share instruction are higher than the means score of the students attending conventional instruction. Hence, the students’ reading comprehension in experimental class that is taught by using Write-Pair-Share technique has more significant effect than students’ reading comprehension in control class.
