The Effectiveness of Picture Story Books Implemented in Improving the Students’ Reading Performance at the First Year of Pkbm Medaso Kolaka
The reality of teaching English Reading at PKBM Medaso Kolaka revealed that most of students have problems and tend to find many difficulties in reading, for example the students low performance and motivation on reading. This research aims to: 1) observe the effects of picture story books on students’ reading performance. 2) clarify students’ perception on the implementation of picture story books in reading class. The research was conducted at firts year of Paket B PKBM Medaso Kolaka by using the experimental design. There were 15 studentsassamplesselectedbyusingpurposivesampling.Theyweredevidedintotwogroups:experimentalandcontrolgroups. Thedata were collected by using the pre-test, the treatment, the post-test, questionnaires, and interviews. The reading test administered to the students of experimental and control class. The data were analyzed and interpreted by using Pearson Product Moment assisted by SPSS 14.0. The results reveal that picture story books is able to improve students’ reading performance and the implementation of picture story books improve students’ interest in reading. There is a significant difference between students’ reading score in the pre-test to post-test, with higherscores found in the post-test. The sig.(2 tailed) was 0.0013 which is lower than 0.05. The comparison of students reading improvement in experimental and control groups reveal the value of 0.025, which means that the improvement is significant. In other word, the implementation of picture story books improve students’ reading performance is significant. In conclusion, the implementation of picture story books can improve students reading perfoermance and sudents’ reading interest.
